The investigation if Exxon misled its investors and the general public about the risks that the climate change posed for the oil and gas company is on in Massachusetts and New York. In the recent development on Wednesday, a New York state judge ordered ExxonMobil Corp to cooperate with New York’s attorney general in recovering the lost emails from an alias account Wayne Tracker, which was actually used by Rex Tillerson the current U.S. Secretary of state when he was the chief executive of the oil company.
Healey’s office in the letter instructed, “Alias email addresses of Exxon executives and documents associated with them must be preserved.”
The Justice of the State Supreme Court in Manhattan, Barry Ostrager too ordered Exxon to turn over all the documents that had been subpoenaed by the attorney general Eric Schneiderman from its management committee by March 31. In November, Schneiderman had issued summon, in connection with his investigation on whether the company misled the investors about the climate change.
It was recently disclosed that the ex-CEO of Exxon, Rex Tillerson used an alias email account. The lawyer for the attorney general on Wednesday at a court hearing said that the company has revealed that it has lost all emails for a year from the alias account Wayne Tracker that Tillerson had used. He used this account to exchange information on climate change and some other matters.
The attorney general has revealed to the court in his March 13 letter that the company did not disclose the alias account on its own and it was found only during the review of certain materials. He said though the company produced some 60 documents that mentioned “Wayne Tracker”, but it never came out with the fact that this email account was in fact operated by Tillerson.
Defending its stand, the company said that there is nothing fishy and it was just used by Tillerson for easy communication with other Exxon officials. Exxon said that Tillerson used to receive floods of mail on his normal account and thus to communicate with other officials on certain matters this alias account was set up. The company also maintained that losing the year’s emails is also not significant since they have already submitted the copies of the same to the attorney general.
Tillerson left the company in December when he was chosen for the post of U.S. Secretary of State.
